Approach

This project is inspired by Sol Lewitt's approach to painting. Lewitt’s guidelines are disciplined, but not strict regarding the final product, allowing the installer to make choices within the rules that vary the end result. Thus, wall drawings are defined by a system and process of creation.

The image record spatial design logic in 2D format. The black areas are baselines for generating hyperbolic surface, while they are either solid or dashed indicating front and back relation. The red dashed lines imply direction of lofting process. The size of grids varied show how different sized modules aggregate and form larger space for different needs

Not only the exterior facade, but the planar space also continues the design language of loft space curves. Through the variations in solidity and voids in modular units, relatively enclosed spaces are created within small-scale modules. These small units themselves enclose larger-scale public spaces. Then, the differences in scale between different modules create large spaces that break the framework, connecting different horizontal planes.

The curved spaces are arranged horizontally, creating a cave-like spatial experience. As people wander through, their line of sight can always traverse the space, allowing them to always be aware of their position within the architecture.
